The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the independent regulator for work-related health and safety. Our purpose is to protect people and the environment – we save lives. We make a real impact, helping people manage risk in many different business contexts. This can be providing smaller businesses with simple advice and clear actions they can take to manage risk themselves. At the opposite end of the scale, this also means tackling the most serious risks to our society. For example, we provide clear communication and guidance to help chemical industries protect people and the environment while trading safely after Brexit or setting up the new Building Safety Regulator as part of the government’s response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

As a Communications and Engagement Lead your main responsibilities would be: 

Reporting to the Head of Internal Communicationsyou will:

• Act as a trusted advisor, support leadership engagement, design and manage internal engagement campaigns and support organisational change
• As part of the Internal Communications team, prepare copy and content for publication through our internal channels
• Work within or across functional communication teams to develop and deliver campaigns and/or implement communication programmes across multiple channels
• Contribute to the strategic direction of HSE communications to enable and drive the branch’s priorities and demonstrate measurable communication outcomes
• Build strong relationships across HSE and other government departments and agencies
• Support the communications branch in monitoring performance and evaluating communication activity to demonstrate the impact of communications

You’ll have relevant experience in:

• Working across a range of communications disciplines, demonstrating the ability to select the most effective methods and channels for communication
• Experience of delivering internal communications campaigns, advising senior leaders on complex challenges and successfully influencing colleagues at all levels
• Experience developing and delivering robust communications strategies that deliver team priorities, implementation plans, and scoring evaluation criteria
• Change management experience in an organisation with a similar sort of culture i.e. highly educated, specialist and tech knowledge, likely to challenge
• Confidence in the role as a trusted advisor with colleagues of all grades
• Awareness of the bigger picture and issues across the organisation
• Have experience in building good working relationships in pressured environments and be an enthusiastic team-player with a proactive and collaborative attitude
• Have political awareness, understanding of wider government agenda and propriety issues
