 Nuclear Operations Technician - Inside IR35

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body created through the Energy Act 2004.

We employ just over 200 staff and have offices in Cumbria, Caithness, Cheshire, London and Oxfordshire. We own 17 sites across England, Wales and Scotland, some dating back to the 1940s, plus the associated liabilities and assets.

We report to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS); for some aspects of our work in Scotland, we are responsible to Scottish ministers.

Our role is strategic: we establish the overall approach, allocate budgets, set targets and monitor progress.

We do not have a hands-on role in cleaning up our facilities. Instead, we deliver our mission through others, primarily 12 businesses.

Responsibilities

We are responsible for:

• decommissioning and cleaning up these nuclear facilities
• ensuring that all waste products, both radioactive and non-radioactive, are safely managed
• implementing policy on the long-term management of nuclear waste
• developing UK-wide strategy and plans for nuclear Low Level Waste (LLW)
• scrutinising the decommissioning plans of EDF Energy, who own the operating fleet of Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations

As a Nuclear Operations Technician your main responsibilities would be: 
Deliver safe and effective support activities as part of the operations support team in order to maximise safety and quality of the operational processes within the plant

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Promote overall nuclear safety (along with all other areas of safety – conventional, industrial, radiological, environmental) by maintaining a safe operating envelope. Oversee the relevant processes employed within the plant checking that all work activities meet site standards, policies, processes and procedures.
• Author / own reports presented to the Management Safety Committee (MSC)
• Undertake role as a PMP project manager, supporting the PMP committee when required as an SME
• Undertake nominated or key operational support roles on a given facility eg: Liquid Effluent Coordinator, COSHH coordinator, Legionella Responsible Person, DSEAR coordinator, Stack Coordinator, Environmental Coordinator, Glove box Champion, Nuclear Material Accountancy Custodian, Local Clearance Coordinator, Security Liaison Officer, Plant Solid Waste Coordinator, Alarm Manager, Local Record Holder (this is not an exhaustive list)
• Deliver plant administration activities through the generation and control of plant instructions including operator instructions, alarm response instructions, emergency operating instructions, and maintenance instructions etc. to ensure that a high standard of operational work is delivered.
• Lead practical problem solving as required and provide subject matter expertise, advice and guidance on specific plant issues, supporting ODM and CDM processes, to ensure that activities are carried out to required standards and in safe conditions:

• Stakeholder Engagement experience.
